Why would an officiant need liability insurance coverage?
Officiants have fewer liability risks than most other vendors when you start to think about “what could go wrong”. But nonetheless, an officiant is his or her own business, and insurance coverage is just as important for an officiant as it is for any other vendor. It protects against liability lawsuits and is required by many hotels and event venues just in order to “operate as a business” at an event and walk in the door. In the event of an accident or incident, lawyers for your client (or the venue if their property is damaged) will elect to sue anyone that could possibly be involved – without business liability insurance, at a minimum, you’d have to hire an attorney out-of-pocket to defend your innocence.
Subcontractors that accept work from larger companies should have their own coverage and their individual PEEP Network membership, as a subcontractor is not personally protected against a liability lawsuit, simply because their employer or agency has a policy.
But I am super careful and I have nothing that could break anything or anybody… Although you may be safety minded, imagine the bill you’d receive for accidentally knocking a candle over during a ceremony and igniting the bride’s dress, the floor of a historic mansion, or a priceless memento owned by the couple or the venue. What if you simply tripped or fell while walking down the steps into a guest or bridal party member causing them bodily harm? For just pennies a day, officiants can sleep soundly, knowing they are covered by a $1M or $2M policy.
Each policy also comes with online account access, and the ability to instantly create Certificates of Insurance with unlimited additional insured edits.
Add a copy of a personalized COI in your contract, or send one in advance to the venue. This simple act shows your utmost professionalism, and encourages venues to add you to their preferred vendor list, as they know you are serious about your business and protecting the venue and your clients.
